Help my students love reading! Do you remember the first book that you really connected with? The first book you loved? Students in my school are inundated with "classic" literature aka: Dead White Guys that they do not connect with and need a chance to read books about young adults, for young adults.
They need to see that literature can talk about the things they love, they feel, and they question.
They are tired of reading something and walking away the same as they were before.
My Project
My hope in choosing these texts in to expose my students to a world outside of their own. I want them to read the stories of other culture, real and imaginary, and compare them to their own. I want them to learn how people can be different from them and still be good people.
We have an overabundance of adult and classic novels taught in the school but do not have any young adult novels.
They will read about young adults encountering obstacles in their lives and discuss how the characters deal with those obstacles. We, as a class, will be able to talk about obstacles they may encounter in their lives and ways to overcome them.
