My Project

The State of Alaska is trying to help students become proficient readers by the third grade. In order to meet the needs of students, educators that teach pre-K through 3rd grades are required to receive training/instruction in evidence-based instruction strategies in literacy. Our school district has mandated that K-3rd grade teachers test and assess the needs of their students. The teachers are then required to create small groups of students will similar abilities and create literacy lessons and activities to meet the needs of the students.

I have a wonderfully diverse group of students.

They are a group of hard workers who are also good citizens. I see lots of enthusiasm and attitudes that are conducive to success. When I started my small groups this fall, I was just as new to the process as the students. I became familiar with the small groups and the monitoring of student progress. I realized early on that we needed a table, preferably one in a kidney shape that could accommodate a small group of students where the teacher has easy access to all students and materials. I have tried several things like the small adult sized table with odd sized chairs. Not all students were able to fit. The chair sizes made that table distracting for and almost an obstacle for students. I tried grouping desks, but that was noisy and disruptive to the other students, and the desks had to be moved back. I tried having the students on the floor and while that is great for some literacy activities, a table is the most necessary item for small group learning. The carpet will be used for other supporting literacy activities such as partner reading and literature circles. I truly appreciate your consideration and help with my project.
