My Students
I have a wonderful group of 23 first graders from a rural area in central Arkansas. It is a diverse group of personalities and backgrounds that include ELLs, greater than 50% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch, military families, special needs, and most importantly awesome kids who are eager to learn!
My first graders are brimming with enthusiasm and excitement for learning, life, friends, and interests.
We jump into projects with both feet, make big plans, work at a breakneck pace, and don't miss a thing!
My Project
Children learn best when they feel they are part of a community, where everyone feels accepted and where individuality is encouraged. My students have worked on portraits in art this year; if fact, they drew a portrait of me that you will notice on my profile. They will each create a self-portrait and I will submit them to be added to a classroom shirt. What better way to display our artwork than with a walking display? I purposefully selected "daisy yellow" because that is our class color. We need 25 students' art designed t-shirts. I think this resource will not only be a sweet memory made, it will also be putting their work on display instilling a sense of pride, and fostering a sense of community among our classroom as we will all have one; we are all different crayons living in the same box.
Building a classroom community enables teachers to address their students' needs that may be lacking to belong.
It gives teachers the opportunity to teach students about respect, responsibility, and how to positively relate to their peers. Art allows students to express themselves and put their creativity to work-what a combination that is sure to improve the atmosphere and instill a sense of pride in their work.
