This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are eager to learn. They love to read, they love math, and, most of all, they love science and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) projects.
My school is located on the south side of Chicago in a high-crime neighborhood.
Students from my school may not have computers at home; some of them may not even have books to read. Because of this, I have spent the past three years making sure that my classroom offers them the learning opportunities that students in other areas enjoy.
My Project
I have been wanting to do a novel study unit with my students for some time. The only thing holding me back is the lack of materials.
I loved all Roald Dahl books as a student, and I want to share my love of reading with my incoming second graders this year.
This class set of books will help students learn to read a chapter book from front to back, learn how to build stamina by reading longer selections, and learn how to sustain interest in a book over time.
I am also requesting the audio version so that students that cannot read the text independently may listen and follow along.
