My Project

I teach English to 4th and 5th graders in a very poor and rural area. Teaching writing to these under privileged students in Eastern KY is already difficult since it is a lot about using proper grammar, but it proves to be even more difficult in a classroom that has no windows and only hard chairs and desks.

The flexible seating I am requesting will make all the difference in my classroom because it will give students who have never felt at home the sense that my classroom is home for them.

Students deserve to feel safe and comfortable somewhere in their lives, and the unfortunate news is that some of them only feel that way at school. My goal is to create an environment where every single day they can come in, make themselves at home, let all their worries go, and learn about how to write and use correct grammar. I wish to teach them skills they will use for the rest of their lives and to make an impact on them that will be unforgettable.

My students truly enjoy getting comfortable at school and I have found that it helps them to perform better on assignments. My students often ask to sit in the floor and I allow them to, but it makes me so sad that they have to sit on a cold concrete floor. All I wish to accomplish is to see a smile on their faces when they walk through my door and see the new seating available to them. They deserve the world, but they especially deserve to feel comfortable at school. If you feel led to, please help make this vision a reality!
