My Students

Being in an autistic unit, it is hard to define a "typical day". We spend a lot of time in small groups working on individualized goals with each of our students. I would consider this year a success if each of my students were able to make progress on their goals and spend time in a general education class.

I currently have nine students ranging from first to third grade.

Each has been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. ASD affects them in many different ways, from social and cognitive delays to sensitivity to sensory input. The school I am currently working at is great. The teachers, administrators and staff all work together to make the environment positive for the student. The general education teachers are a great support to the special education staff and make sure all of our students feel included as much as possible.

My Project

My students will be using the iPad to access apps that can track behavioral and academic data. They will be able to use apps that will be engaging and educational. They will also use the file folders to work independently, which is often a struggle. Giving them opportunities to succeed and stay on task without as much oversight as they typically need. The camera will be used to take pictures of familiar places, people and situations to make social stories where the kids star in a book that teaches social skills. I have also requested a lot of sensory materials. These are used when the kids are in need of sensory input. They can fidget, hold, squeeze and manipulate these materials to satisfy sensory needs.

The requested materials will give my students and staff the tools needed to maximize our efforts and effectiveness.

We will be able to have the materials needed and ability to track the important data that will improve our teaching.
