Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Empowerment in the 21st century: what if students were able to listen to high quality and age appropriate tutorials? What if students were able to develop their writing by first recording their ideas? What if iPods and mp3 players were used as tools for learning?
All of our students are expected to pass the New York State Regent's exam.
Most come into high school with atrocious expressive written language skills.
Many of our students are designated students with special needs, English Language Learners, and have their own iPod/mp3 player listening devices.
My Project
We are requesting microphones to be used to record podcasts (tutorials and interpretations of specific subject content) and as a device to develop individual student writing. The most positive aspect to creating podcasts is that students will be actively engaged in the learning process by explaining their understanding. Meanwhile, other students will benefit from listening.
Some students need to have information translated into their own language and others simply need information translated into their own lingo. Other students will be using the microphones to record their own ideas as a step to develop their own writing. Once they have their ideas recorded orally, they can then replay their own words until they have more developed writing pieces. In many cases a students' mind moves faster than their hand writing skills. Given a microphone, the student can record her/his ideas and develop her/his ideas, and ultimately write it down.
By developing more powerful written pieces the students will be empowered and have a better sense of their own potential.
In addition, many students will be able to have access to content that they cannot read on their own. They will be motivated to listen because their peers helped develop the tutorials and summaries in "their" language.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
