Reading can be hard. In fourth grade, we start to make the switch from "learning to read" to "reading to learn". So, for struggling readers, not only is reading difficult, but learning is difficult also.
I have 49 fourth grade students, many who come from low income families, that I teach throughout the school day.
Some of my students are great readers and they love reading. Others are average readers and do it because they have to. However, I have a small group of students who really struggle with reading. They just haven't figured it out yet. This makes their entire day difficult. They have to "read to learn" in all subject areas now, not just in reading class! I often give them articles to read in social studies. Of course we discuss the articles, but those struggling readers can't participate in the discussion because they didn't understand half of the article! This isn't because they can't understand it. They are simply working so hard to decode the text, their brain can't do everything at once yet! I have found that when articles and books are read aloud to these students, they have much greater comprehension than when they tried to read it all by themselves.
For this reason, I'd love to add some mp3 players to my classroom. Many of the articles that I give to my students come with an mp3 download! All I need are the players and my struggling readers are set! I plan to download the articles onto the players and allow the students to "read" the article while they listen to the audio. I believe these students will then come to our discussions with a much better understanding of the articles and feel more confident when participating in the class discussions. They will still be learning the material without having to struggle through the reading.
Your donation to this project will benefit my struggling readers.
Because with the help of these mp3 players, they will no longer be held back in social studies due to their reading abilities. It will give them the confidence to know that they can learn despite their reading struggles.
