Our students are from a small rural area. Our school is one campus with grades PreK-twelve and less than 30 students in most grades. I teach students in 7th through 12th grade, and like teachers in small schools, they wear many hats. Many are involved in many extra-curricular activities, take college courses as they enter high school, and likely help take care of younger siblings or other family members in addition to being secondary students. This is what is most impressive about these students. I am involved with the academic extracurricular students who compete against students from all across the state in academic competitions in speech, debate, STEM, ELA, social studies, business, and more. They extend their learning in the classroom through these activities.
My Project
Our students compete in various academic extracurricular activities across the state including journalism, debate, STEM competitions, and more. They work for hours on end during the week and give up their Saturdays to compete. Funding these competitions and the materials needed for them can be a challenge for small schools. Being from a small school should not be a disadvantage to students. When students were asked what supplies they felt we needed one of the first things they asked for was paper so I have requested legal pads for note taking. These are used for taking notes in speech and debate rounds. Additionally competitions are moving into the new era and computers and tablets can now be used in many competitions, and this is one of the most difficult items to fund locally. Included in this project is a laptop to be used by the Computer Science, Journalism, Ready Writing, and Speech and Debate teams to compete in their respective competitions as well as a tablet for debaters to utilize for research and speech preparation.
