Moving to Save Lives!

Help me give my students UNICEF Kid Power Bands. I wanted to get these bands for my students a few years ago but couldn't. Now DonorsChoose.org is partnering with UNICEF Kid Power Band.

My Students

My 24 urban third graders come to school with a lot of energy and the only time they really get to burn off that energy is 20 minutes of daily recess and 5 fifty minute periods of gym A MONTH! Studies show how important exercise is to their young growing minds and bodies. "A Week" is by far my students' favorite week when they have gym Monday through Friday, but that's just not enough! My third graders NEED POWER BANDS!

My Project

The UNICEF Kid Power Band is a one-size-fits-most fitness band. This band tracks both steps and movement. With UNICEF Kid Power Bands, kids run, jump and dance to unlock funding from partners which UNICEF uses to deliver lifesaving nutrition (RUTF packets) to severely malnourished children. What is RUTF? RUTF is peanut butter “amplified” – it is loosely defined as a fortified peanut butter paste rich in vitamins and energy contained in a package that looks like an oversized ketchup packet. Students go on missions to complete standards-aligned lessons and activities, where they learn about different cultures and UNICEF's work to help children everywhere survive and thrive. On their missions, students get active with their Kid Power Band. The more kids move, the more points they earn, the more lives they save. In third grade, we learn about being citizens in OUR community, but how about being GLOBAL CITIZENS?

Kid Power instills awareness, empathy and grit in children.

These qualities are critical to their social and emotional development. UNICEF Kid Power provides educators with tools and resources to teach 21st century skills and inspire kids to be effective problem-solvers and gain a better sense of self and community. UNICEF Kid Power integrates global education with experiences that give kids’ actions real-life impact. With this lifesaving impact, kids become more aware of the world around them, and are empowered to solve the challenges they face in their own communities. Kids Power Band paired activity with impact because active students are better learners.
