My class of fourth and fifth grade students are primarily children of Mexican, San Salvadorian, Guatemalan, Pilipino, Armenian, and Chinese immigrants to the U.S., as are the other 180 students in rest of the fourth and fifth grades. English is their second language and American their second culture. Our North Hollywood neighborhood area is a transition neighborhood where most families rent instead of own, and 88% of our students qualify for the free breakfast and lunch program. They know little beyond their own neighborhood. Some of our students are very bright despite difficulty with reading and writing in English, while the majority find reading and writing to be very effortful. However, ALL of our students learn every day. They learn through movement and music, through games and puzzles, through building models and working in small groups. That's where you come in!! I am asking for 25 quarts of various colors of outdoor enamel paint so that I can make large maps of the 13 colonies, California, Civil War USA, Westward expansion USA, and the world on the black top near the 4th and 5th grade classrooms. Our students will be able to move from colony to colony, from state to state, from country to country as they learn geography and history. It will be much easier for them to make sense of the scale of the small maps in their text books, and the ones we use in other learning activities. They will be moving through history, MOVING TO LEARN. I also want to paint large diagrams of the digestive, respiratory, circulatory, and excretory body systems near our rooms. Once again, the students will be learning through moving as they walk food through the digestive process, oxygen through the respiratory system, and blood through the heart, arteries and veins. They will be able to read and understand what they have made sense of through movement. They will be able to write better because they have experiences to share, and a good reason for using science vocabulary to explain what they did. Current cognitive specialists have demonstrated that all students can learn well when they are taught using their preferred learning modality. Movement is one of those learning modalities, and I know through experience that it is an effective way to teach most of our 4th and 5th graders.
