"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." - Ignacio Estrada.
Students need movement. They need to keep active to keep their brains active.
I teach an amazing group of sixth grade students at a low income school.
They are funny, smart and caring. I have a large percentage of my students who ask to come tutor with me before or after school. They have the motivation and drive to learn. They have the ability to be successful. Sometimes, they just need a little extra guidance to stay on the track for success.
My Project
The materials I am requesting are a class set of exercise balls. My students would be able to use these everyday instead of the stiff, old chairs. Students would be able to bounce, roll and shift around on the exercise balls while remaining at their desk to work. So many kids are unable to complete work because they need to move. Students get up to sharpen pencils, throw away a scrap of paper, use the restroom just to walk the halls, etc. Students need to move! If we had these exercise balls in lieu of chairs, students would be able to move while learning!
My students will not only be able to move, they will be able to learn.
Kids will be less likely to disrupt class by roaming the room and will be able to better focus on their work. In addition, students will be getting more physical activity and becoming healthier while learning!
