In Kindergarten we are moving nonstop. Rotations in the morning and afternoon, small group lessons, student led opportunities, and so much more. As a school, we work hard to build relationships with students and families to engage all parties in the learning experience. We laugh, love, and dance all while learning to the best of our abilities.
We are a Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade building in the middle of a rural Amish community.
Our Kindergarten classes are comprised of a total of around 35 students.
The students in my classroom are full of love and love to learn. I want to provide them with materials and ways to improve their learning experiences while having fun. I want them to learn without realizing they are learning and to remember their year in kindergarten in a positive manner.
My Project
Since we are moving nonstop in this classroom, we have decided that some flexible seating choices would greatly enhance our learning opportunities. Many of our students have a hard time sitting still and staying seated for more than 10 minutes. With these flexible seating options, our students will have the opportunity to wiggle, fidget, and learn in a way that best suits their needs.
Kindergarten students need to have the choice to wiggle and move while they learn, and regular seats do not fit that style of learning.
The different types of seating we are wanting to use in our classroom will hopefully help all of the students to have better focus and ability to learn each day. With this project, we are wanting to add Bilibo seats, lap desks, scoop seats, fidget bands for the bottom of the chairs, wobble cushions, and yoga ball chairs to help our students to move and groove while they learn. The Bilibo seats will be used during carpet time and Daily 5 time as well. We will use a combination of stools and the yoga ball chairs during rotations and during individual seat work. Lap desks will be used around the room for all different subjects, and at the carpet for rotations as well.
We hope that getting these different seating options will help enable independence in our learners and allow them to use choice wisely, in their education, for years to come!
