Our school has traversed through unknown territory with the COVID virus flipping our teaching world. As school resumes back to pre-COVID measures the classroom is dealing with lack of stamina and motivation, low academics as well as behaviors not conducive to a positive learning environment. I am selecting books, self-regulation tools and snacks as a way to help students manage self-initiated breaks and incentive outcomes to help the transition back to the classroom.
Returning back to what classroom learning looked like pre-Covid has been a challenge and with the use of various tools and incentives, I am hoping to improve our challenge areas.
Using books will allow me to read relatable stories that teach lessons or allow students to make connections. The journals and self-management tools such as the fidgets, stress balls, magnet tiles and water tubes can help students reset, refocus and self-manage themselves in the classroom. Lastly, the snacks are used to incentivized desired behavior or provide an intermittent non-contingent reward for being self-directed.
Providing student with tools and incentives can help motivate and transition them into being more independent and aware of times when they need to reset and focus. I am hoping that this will allow for learning to occur as well as behavior to improve.
