Moving Bodies Make for Focusing Bilingual Brains!

My students need stability ball chairs and wobble chairs so we can work on sustaining our focus and help us move. Our little bodies are not made to stay seated for a lot our day.

My Students

Everyday I have the privilege of working with fun, excited and curious learners through my 1st grade Dual Language Immersion classroom. I teach in a 50/50 model classroom where my students grow their bilingual brains by learning for 50% of their day in Spanish and 50% of their day in English. Not only are we learning to be bi-literate, we are also learning to be wonderful, kind and empathetic citizens for the future. The student population consists of 42% of English Language Learners and 57% of students from low-income families. We are a kindergarten through second grade school and we have about 500 students.

My Project

Learning takes a lot of focus! Especially when you are learning in your second language! For half of the school day, my learners are learning in their second language, which can make it even harder to stay focused. Kids also need to move. So when you combine learning in your second language with the need to move, you can end up with students who easily become unfocused.

By offering flexible seating options where students are allowed to wiggle, bounce and move, students will be able to move as they are working out their brains.

These seating options will encourage students to stay focused by wanting to stay in their space because they will be able to satisfy their need to move while they are working.

To focus kids will be able to move on the Wobble Stools by swaying or wobbling back and fourth. They will be able to bounce on the yoga balls and rock and wobble on the inflatable wobble cushion. The tray is for an chair that I already have that needs a place for students to write.
