Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Providing additional toys and equipment for recess would greatly benefit my 22 students at our Title I elementary school by supporting their physical, social, and emotional development in meaningful ways. Many of these students come from low-income households where access to recreational resources and safe play spaces outside of school is limited. Recess is one of the few times during the day when they can freely engage in physical activity, explore creativity, and build critical social skills through play. When there are enough toys, balls, jump ropes, and other equipment available, students are more likely to be active, take turns, collaborate, and problem-solve together in ways that foster healthy friendships and teamwork. Without adequate resources, recess can become a time of boredom, frustration, or exclusion when students are forced to compete over the limited equipment available.
Investing in more recess toys and equipment would also contribute to improved behavior and focus in the classroom.
Research shows that active play helps children regulate their energy, manage stress, and return to learning environments more engaged and ready to participate. For students at a Title I school, where additional challenges such as food insecurity, family stress, and limited access to enrichment opportunities are common, recess becomes an especially valuable outlet. When students have enough options for play, they are more likely to feel included, build confidence, and develop a sense of belonging at school. Providing these resources is a simple but powerful way to support their growth, well-being, and overall school experience.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
