I teach an exciting, motivated, and creative group of fifth grade students. My student population is very diverse. I have some who are special needs students whoare working below grade level, while others need to extend their thinking and apply the skills they have mastered in meaningful ways.
My students enjoy coming to school each day and learning from each other.
They use their critical thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They are creative and are health conscious. When I told them I could write a project for their ideas, they were very excited to incorporate movement into our daily lessons.
My Project
My very active group of students need ample opportunities during the day to release all of their energy. On the first day of school I asked my students what factors lead them feeling disengaged or bored throughout the day. My kids told me that they are sick of sitting at a desk for eight hours. They wanted a way to be able to move during the day that would not get them in trouble. I borrowed a Hokki stool and Kore Wobble chair from my neighbors and at the end of the day, asked my students what they thought. Their responses overwhelmed me. I heard things like, "I L-O-V-E love it!", or "Can we get some for our room?", or "This is so cool!", I smiled when I heard, "Wow! All that moving made me tired".
After hearing and seeing my students' reactions, I knew we needed to get moving all day in our classroom.
I am requesting seven Hokki stools and one Kore Wobble chair for our classroom. These will rotate among my students so that they will be able to have a stool at least one day a week. Having these stools will help my students reach their goal of being active 60 minutes a day, as they will be moving all day in the classroom. These stools provide students the opportunity to work their core muscles, burn energy, and stay engaged with the learning.
Sitting has become such a big part of the school day. My students feel that adding Hokki stools and a Kore Wobble chair will help them maximize their learning potential in the classroom, add more than 60 minutes of movement throughout their day, & help them concentrate! Students feel that flexible seating options in our classroom will help them be more successful.
