Movin' and Groovin' in 1st

My Students

The majority of my students eat both breakfast and lunch every day in our school cafeteria. My classroom consists of 20 bright-eyed first grade students who vary in their abilities. In my classroom, I teach inclusion students who have specific learning disabilities, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) students, and gifted and general education students. Even though my students differ in background knowledge, capabilities, and interests, they each have their own special talents and come to school ready and eager to learn.

My Project

"Can I sit somewhere else?", "Do I have to sit?" and "Can't I just stand?" are a few of the questions I hear each week from students. They are always wanting to do something other than sit in the school-issued hard chairs during work time and who can blame them? The hard chairs are uncomfortable and though I try to have students moving around the room during learning, they do need somewhere to sit when it's work or small group time.

Students need to opportunity to have flexible seating in the classroom where they can get their wiggles out and focus on their work at the same time.

This project would allow for this. Students can choose where they believe they'd learn best, whether on Hokki stools, balance balls, at their desks with bouncy chair bands, on a Movin' Sit pad, in a rocker, or on a Spooner board. All of these options allow for motion and will help students increase movement while simultaneously helping their circulation and posture. This is the solution the students have been begging for and I cannot wait to see these alternative choices put into action in the classroom.
