Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When are we ever going to use this in the real world? By using video technology students will see how math ties into the real world. Acceleration, quadratics, and other math topics will come to life as we use student shot videos to analyze and interpret the real world.
Our students are your normal early teens.
They love technology and getting their hands dirty when learning. They are enthusiastic learners when their spark is ignited, but when learning is limited to straight book work, they sputter. Many of our students have aspirations to be the first in their family to attend and complete college. Keeping their interest in learning, seeing how math works in the real world, and having them guide their learning will keep them excited and engaged in learning.
My Project
Students will use the video software of their iPad to film the real world events that tie into classroom learning (hitting a baseball, racing, dropping an object). They will be able to have a more accurate reading of timing to be able to calculate speed, acceleration, and maximum height. They will trace the path made by the objects to see graphs in the real world, such as parabolas and accelerations. Students will then be able to explain what an acceleration is, why it matters, and how it applies to the real world. Students will also be able to explain in the real world what the vertex of a parabola is, and given the video be able to approximate the equation of a baseball hit in the air, find the maximum height, and predict the landing time.
Most of the students in our community have dreams of going on to higher education, but without the drive and love for learning these sometimes go unfulfilled.
By fostering a love and understanding of mathematics, these dreams will have more fuel for completion.
