Movie Theater Time: Purchasing Snacks to Practice Money Skills

Help me give my students snacks/drinks to purchase, a cash register, and play money to practice money skills.

My Project

As an Activities of Daily Living teacher, I will be working with students on financial literacy skills. Having a selection of snack items and drinks that they like will have them engage/participate in money-skills activities.

Students will practice addition, subtraction, and rounding up to the nearest dollar.

By having bills and coins, students will practice handling money. This is an important skill for my students to work on.

Help me give my students snacks/drinks to purchase, a cash register and play money to practice money skills. Students will also practice job skills in which students will take turns being a concession stand worker and a movie theater ticket booth worker.

Students will be given an allotted amount of money to purchase a movie ticket and a snack item(s) and/or drink. They will communicate to another student (concession stand worker) what they would like to purchase using their preferred mode of communication. They will have to look at the price tag(s) and determine if they have enough money to buy the item(s). The student purchasing the items will be able to use a calculator to add up the item amounts to make sure they have enough money to buy the item(s). The cashier will enter the cost of the items into the register and tell the customer the cost of the item(s). Students will have to count out the amount of money and give it to the cashier.

Students will be practicing money skills and communication skills. These are daily living skills that they will practice multiple times and they will be able to generalize these skills in the community when they go to a store to purchase items.
