My students need 2 ball chairs with stability, 1 balance ball, and 1 tactile massage ball for sensory input and sensory organization.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My special needs preschoolers have trouble regulating their bodies & attending to instruction while sitting on typical chairs. It's hard for typical preschoolers to sit and sit and sit but imagine a child with autism or a developmental disability having to sit for any length of time on typical chairs.
I teach phenomenal preschool students with autism, language delays and/or other developmental disabilities in a suburban Maryland school who serves low-income students.
My students have sensory processing deficits which impacts students' ability to attend to instruction and learn without having proper and preventative sensory input. Without this sensory input students may bump into things, fall to the ground, hit, run or climb everything. Their little bodies have to be ready to learn all the language, social, and pre-academic skills. My goal as an early childhood special educator is to give my students the social, language, academic and developmental skills they need to have a strong learning foundation. Our students with special needs require additional support to regulate sensory input which is where these items would help incredibly!
These specific items are incredibly versatile. The tactile massage ball can accommodate one or two students, making this not only a sensory experience but also a social experience. The 2 chair balls and stand is also versatile, as the student can be positioned in several different ways. We will be using these items during literacy circle, greeting circle and instructional time at the tables or on an as-needed basis for any student needing extra stimulation at that moment. With these items, my students will be able to have sensory experiences that I can not replicate. They have specific sensory needs that require specific sensory materials. For my students with special needs, having access to a bouncy chair or ball should increase their ability to attend to instruction and be more available for learning!
The addition of these sensory and alternative seating resources to my class will have an immediate positive impact on my students.
I will be able to implement strategies for sensory regulation I know works for special learners. I will be able to do this immediately and without having to borrow from other children in need. These items will not only be extremely beneficial to my current students but to future students with special needs in the years to come!
