I am a new teacher at a Title l school. We have a growing percentage of 58% free and reduced-price lunch for students. Our school provides breakfast for all students every morning. I have a handful of students that are provided with a backpack of food every Friday to feed their family for the weekend, so what can I do?
I try my best every day to keep my students engaged, motivated and to make sure they leave school knowing that I care about them.
I leave a ukulele in my classroom, and we learn our reading strategies through singing songs. I grab their attention through music. My students are setting daily behavior goals for themselves, and these goals are allowing them to feel in control of their own learning! It has really been amazing to see my students grow and become more confident in themselves!
I feel very blessed to be a part of this school, to make an impact on these young lives, and to be able to reach out and make my classroom better than what it is. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read over my project.
My Project
"A 2008 study found that children actually need to move to focus during a complicated mental task," says the National Education Association. One way I encourage children to overcome their daily distractions is by providing them with choices from the moment they walk in the door. Their choices are based on their personal goal that day, whether it be behavior, an activity for morning work, or a job they have within the classroom. Enable to get students to better focus in a classroom, movement is another area that I would love to see my students improve on. The number of desks I currently have in my room is restricting the amount of movement for students to do such as stretching or wiggling.
With fewer desks and more options, my students will be able to experience real-world decision making on a daily basis.
What option makes them the most comfortable? How do they discover their own wants and needs while taking into considerations another person's? How can they communicate effectively with others if they desire a change in seating? Why not start promoting these real-life experiences in the classroom?
The first thought I had was, "Where would they keep their supplies?" I would need cubbies to place in my room for them to keep their school supplies in. This would help students to get what is only required for the lesson, and not be distracted by other items. Then, I would need a variety of seating options to meet each child's needs: standing table, bean bags, scoop chairs, floor pads, etc.
I would love for my students to take charge of their learning and provide them with more real-life experiences.
