Help me give my students four wobble chairs to provide them with the sensory input, increased blood flow, & core strengthening to help them be more successful in speech-language therapy, as well as improving fine motor skills.
Our school is a Title One school. Every child receives breakfast and lunch during their school day for free. Students that are able to stay after school can participate in the "Supper Club" to get a meal before they go home. Additionally, many of our students receive the "weekend backpacks" loaded with food to help them make it through the weekend. Many of my students are in single parent homes, some are being raised by grandparents, and now, many in our community are unemployed due to the pandemic. Our community may take longer to recover than others, as so much of our industry is tied to hospitality and gaming.
I have students that are eligible as having Autism, Specific Learning Disabilities, ADHD, Developmental Delays, and delays in speech-language.
They are a joy, amazing, and special, and deserve every opportunity to succeed!
My Project
Many of the students that receive speech-language therapy services have not just speech-language delays, but difficulty with learning, attention, and focus. Wobble Chairs provide the students with many benefits such as:
1) Sensory input and energy burning: Many of my students have difficulty focusing and attending to task.
I typically work with students for a 30 minute session, and we have a lot to do in a short amount of time each week. The Wobble Chairs allow the students to move in a non-disruptive way. They get the stimulus their muscles are looking for, making them more attentive and focused during speech therapy sessions.
2) Improved posture and muscle tone: helping to strengthen the core abdominal and trunk muscles which, in turn, increases motor control for fine motor tasks such as using a pencil and scissors.
3) Increased blood flow : As students move during active seating, it gets the heart pumping and the blood flowing. A better blood flow means more oxygen gets to the brain. More oxygen to the brain means an increase in brain function, which leads to improved focus and better knowledge retention.
