Our school is a special program for children with emotional and/or behavioral challenges. They are high energy with quick tempers. Our students are also loving children who crave attention and love, and they want to please.
They have grown to have a love for learning.
They spend an hour or more on the bus each day to attend our program. They come to us from homes that may be "broken", their needs are high and their stories are heartbreaking. When our students begin our program, they may not have been in a classroom for months and have difficulty transitioning to our highly structured environment. However, with the love they receive from our ever-giving staff they quickly learn to trust and and then blossom. Many of our students will spend several school years with us before they are fully prepared to return to their base schools.
My Project
Flexible seating allows my students to better focus in the classroom. My students struggle with emotional and behavioral challenges and thus require "out-of-the-box" teaching strategies for maximum engagement. Currently, I allow my students to move throughout the day and one might find them laying the floor, stretching, pacing, kneeling, and/or standing. Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and less disruptive of their peers when they are given a choice of where to work.
The products that I have selected will help my students by giving them additional seating options to make more effective learning choices. The wobble stools allow students with sensory challenges to spin and rock. The desk bicycle will students with endless energy. The ball seats, balls, and cushions assist with students that like to bounce. These seating options will help provide a positive learning environment to improve student performance and increase student achievement!
