Movement in the Classroom While Learning

My students need a variety of seating choices (t-stool, Bilibo, plastic stools) to allow them the opportunity for movement during learning time.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being a child in kindergarten where your days consisted of crafting and painting? Each day we would spend time exploring ourselves through art and play. Now with rigorous standards children are expected to complete academic tasks for longer periods of time. With old school seating the children are often succumbed to work at generic desks and seats that do not allow the opportunity for movement. I am currently teaching TK and kindergarten at a Title 1 school. I have 25 students in my class 14 boys and 11 girls. This bunch is very enthusastic about learning but often find themselves falling out of their chairs or just plain have trouble sitting in a standard chair. Their wiggly little bodies need constant movement and the the provided seating doesn't allow for chairs.

My Project

Studies show that when children are confined to chairs where they are not offered opportunities for movement they are often distracted and have a difficult time completing tasks. At the ages of 4 and 5 children should not be expected to sit anymore than their age plus or minus two minutes. Meaning they really can't sit longer for more than 6 minutes. With adaptive seats the children will be able to sit for longer periods of time because they can move while sitting. By allowing my students different seating choices they have the opportunity to choose the seating arrangement that will allow them the most beneficial environment for them to learn in for that day. The chairs chosen allow for sitting, standing, and reclining.
