My students are a diverse group of kindergarteners from an area that has many single-parent families as well as multiple languages. My school is set in a community that has long been a family community. It is a Title I school, meaning that most students get free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch. For some of these little people, it may be the only food they get all day. Many of my new little friends did not attend preschool and come to me without the background knowledge of their letters, letter sounds or print. A few are ESOL students but every single one of them is trying to absorb all the knowledge I put out into my lessons in the classrooms! I know these 5 year olds are bright, curious learners with the drive to question the world and learn beyond their greatest potential and I can't wait to help them along their way!
My Project
These balance balls, wiggle pads, and wobble stools will help my children feel free to move in the classroom without interrupting our small group activities, as well as allowing them to "get their wiggles out" in a safe, productive, focused manner as opposed to fidgeting or tipping in a chair. I can already see the small groups working actively engaged in reading, writing and math lessons while lightly bouncing and getting sensory input as they learn! My kindergartners will love the less structured, more focused, active, movement of group rotations and I will be thrilled to see the active learning and engagement in my classroom!
