Movement and Mindfulness

Help me give my students yoga mats and equipment for movement breaks to help support focus during academic time.

My Students

Students in the special education classrooms have varied needs, both academically and behaviorally. Students with autism, Down syndrome, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, anxiety, auditory sensitivity, sensory processing disorder and specific learning disabilities are included in the population of students served in my classroom.

This year, my students are both compassionate and creative.

They use our sidewalk chalk to write positive messages to the other students at the school. They also enjoy using their precious minutes in choice activity time to watercolor pictures for teachers and friends. They are a truly inspiring group of kids!

My Project

My students begin each day with a 10 minute yoga and mindfulness activity to get the wiggles out and prepare to focus on learning. We also take active breaks throughout the day, which can include tossing a football, playing catch, or dancing. We need yoga mats for our morning mindfulness activities so that each student has a comfortable space for movement. We could also use balls and other athletic equipment for our active breaks throughout the day. When we take active breaks, my students return to their academic tasks with more focus and motivation. Please help us keep movement going in the classroom.
