Move Over, Leonardo, Pre-K is Working on Masterpieces

My students need crayons, scissors, and play dough for our preschool classroom.

"I teach preschool in a large, urban school in New York City. Over the years I have noticed that since then there has a been a push to start academics earlier and earlier, the children in my classes are having difficulty with their fine motor skills. Many are unable to zipper their clothing or tie their shoelaces. Teaching handwriting is very difficult. To combat these problems, I would like the children in my preschool class to have the opportunity to use Playdoh. I would have the children strengthen their fine motor skills by squeezing and molding the dough. They will also have the opportunity to make cut outs of letters, shapes and numbers with Playdoh. This way they are learning the numbers and the alphabet and at the same time are strengthening their fine motor skills. We also need just plain old crayons. We have the thin ones and this is not ideal for preschool. They would really benefit from the jumbo crayons. They can grip them better and these crayons do not break. It is better for them and is definitely more appropriate for preschool. More importantly, I will see an improvement in their fine motor skills which will be reflected in their handwriting, their drawing, and even in tying their shoelaces. Jumbo crayons are the best! I hope you can help us out. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read our proposal for Playdoh and jumbo crayons.
