My students need multiple things, such as, yoga equipment, neuroscience activities, and curriculum, to internalize knowledge about their brains and biology and to apply those mind/body connections to move from trauma-related survival mode to calm resiliency.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students range from 2nd to 6th grade with reading levels from K to 6th and vocabulary skills from 1st to high school levels. They make up a self-contained comprehensive behavioral unit related to their lagging social, emotional, and behavioral skills which has had negative impact on their acquisition of academic skills.
My students are heroes.
They've survived much trauma in their young lives and they still show up for school. Trauma in tow, but they bring much love and hunger to learn with them as well.
My Project
My students struggle with regulating their emotions and physical responses to negative emotions which often lands them in trouble. I want to take away the mystery and give them high impact tools to help them build mental and emotional resiliency through mind/body competence.
Experiments and activities from Dr. Chudler's book and Brain Lab will give them hands-on learning about the brain and connections to the body.
The Mind Up curriculum will blend with the yoga for kids materials to strengthen their ability to calm down and, along with kinesthetic activities in the classroom, support increased focus on the learning they love.
