Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at this school are from lower socioeconomic status. Our school's population is 90% African American. They are anxious to learn, want to succeed, and are very helpful.
I am a second year teacher.
We are needing balls, jump ropes, and other activities for recess. Board games are for indoor recess during the bitter Oklahoma winter. They enjoy playing ball together and are currently borrowing materials from other grades and the PE teacher. It would be nice to have our own materials to share as a grade.
My Project
The basketballs we are currently using are worn and borrowed. The students enjoy playing basketball and several are on outside teams. They also enjoy football, the school team includes a few girls who like to practice at recess. The students learn to cooperate and team work through organized play. As the seasons change, it will be possible to engage them in organized sports such as kickball. This teaches teamwork and will engage them as a classroom community.
The winters in Oklahoma are bitter.
Although we don't have much snow, the wind is terrible and the wind chill falls too low for outside recess. Board games are another way to encourage cooperative play and teach fair play and taking turns.
