Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Listening to a teacher talk on and on can get boring, especially when you are just learning English. Staying interested and engaged in a lesson can make all the difference in understanding what is going on. What if you could be part of the lesson? be, all the time!

My students are primarily English language learners from low income or migrant families.

Most of them get little inspiration and support for their education from their families. Our school is located in a small town in Central California where farm workers and factory workers make up the majority of the population. Many students come and go as the work opportunities shift in the area and we usually have two or three students every year in my class that are brand new to the country and even brand new to school at all!

My Project

Keeping students engaged in lessons is always a major factor in accelerating their learning. If students aren't active, they are probably day dreaming (you remember that). So far we have used small white boards for students to write responses on and I have one electronic tablet I can give to a student to interact with computer made lessons projected on the board. The students love using the tablet to circle answers and draw on the computer. But it is still only one student at a time. What if they could ALL choose answers, draw pictures and select images on the lesson to show what they know? What if the computer could keep track of each student's responses so I know who is really getting it? Microsoft's "Mouse Mischief" is a free program that would allow me to create PowerPoint lessons that would work with multiple mouses. After a lesson the computer can tell me who answered first and what answers the students chose. All I need for this is a classroom set of wireless mouses!

I've learned a second language.

I've been in a class where the teacher is talking and I can't seem to keep up. My mind wandered and I lost a lot of content. Students these days are so into technology, that anything they can do on a computer captivates them. I see the use of this program as a great way to keep my students excited and engaged in my lessons.
