Mouse and Track Pad for Students with Special Needs

My students need the Apple Magic Trackpad 2 and Magic Mouse 2 to use with the Macbook Air that was recently funded.

My Students

My students are between the ages of 12 and 13 and are functioning on a 2-3rd grade reading and math level. They should be learning on a 7th to 8th grade level, but due to their abilities, they do not learn as regular children do. A typical day in my room consist of reviewing and repeating skills.

Sometimes some of my students understand what is being instructed but cannot apply the skills learned and/or taught.

With the use of technology, some of these skills are easier learned. My students come from the highest poverty level in Brooklyn and cannot afford these technology tools in their home life. Through the school technology cluster, they enjoy using what technology we have and seem to learn more when they are using hands-on learning tools. They enjoy the ease of using technology in the classroom and seems to adjust very well when contents are being taught through visual and animated learning.

My Project

The mouse and track pad will help me teach my students necessary skills to use a laptop. Without transitioning from one area to another and losing precious time, my students will be able to access work from their desk. Some students may be able to work on their fine motor skills by maneuvering their fingers across the mouse and track pads. I feel my students grasp concepts better when they have hands-on learning.

They will have the opportunity to explore and create future class projects, show and tell what they created by building social skills, and increase their academic awareness.

The project will also make my students' lives better by exposing them to technology that they do not have in their home lives and utilizing different tools to help them complete assignments.
