My students need to experience a once in a lifetime activity to hike up a mountain in New Hampshire. Along the way they will observe wildlife, conduct field investigations, and view the sites.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a teacher in an urban low-income school my students face many challenges outside of the classroom. Despite these challenges they are hard working, determined, and inquiring group of students. I am requesting funding to take my 5th graders on a learning experience of a lifetime outside of the classroom.
As their science teacher I often see my students struggling to make real world connections to the content due to lack of opportunities they have outside of school.
Unfortunately, families in our school do not have the resources to supply these learning opportunities for my students. This lack of opportunity makes it difficult to create those real world connections and often times these questions are posed on state testing leaving our students at a disadvantage from those who has these experiences.
My Project
Despite being in a crowded classroom my students are hard workers and have improved their reading levels and math scores. They are eager to learn and have experiences that they have not yet had or may not ever get the opportunity to have.
A Mountain Classroom Experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity that would create a lifelong memory for my students.
During the Mountain Classroom experience students will hike up a mountain to a waterfall. Along the way they will participate in various science field work such as plant and tree ID-ing, sensory explorations, forest inventory and sampling, among other things that the field guides may have planned.
My students are not currently offered opportunities such as this and when presented with the idea of a Mountain Classroom their eyes lit up, and they became excited about the possibility.
