My Project
Thank you for considering funding my project. I am a 6th grade math teacher, working in a school district where almost all students are from low-income households.
I strongly believe that motivation is the key to success, and a positive attitude can be developed toward math with motivation.
Motivating students on regular basis with small incentives like pencils, squishes, dry erase markers for completing the classwork/homework, participating in discussions, showing their work, and trying their best will give them needed confidence to be successful in life regardless of their socioeconomic status. I am also planning to keep some bars, crackers, and fruit snacks handy, so students have access to them when they are hungry as research demonstrates that students who are at risk for hunger are more likely to have attention and behavioral issues and less likely to perform well in school.
Last week when module one was finished we had an ice cream party and my students had a blast! Almost all of them completed module one, so they can be invited to the ice cream party. With that huge success, I am planning to have one more ice cream party when students complete module 2 in December and then module 3 in February. I am requesting some syrups and toppings for my next ice cream party.
Motivation has a strong impact on student learning and achievement. Students who are motivated to learn to persist longer, produce higher quality effort, and perform better in classes. I also requested a student work turn in station and 12 drawer cart to store supplies for Math centers.
