My students are a very diverse group with an equally diverse set of needs. We are a larger school in a high poverty district within a small city. All students receive free breakfast and lunch to ensure that they each get to eat every day. Eating breakfast and lunch are just two of the many challenges my students face each and every day. Many of them have issues that extend beyond the classroom. It is my job to ensure that they are able to focus on their academics while helping them navigate through their personal lives; learning coping skills, communication skills, and gaining self-confidence.
My students are amazing children who deserve every opportunity to achieve success.
My class has a number of students with special learning needs; many who struggle with focus and attention. Many did not have the opportunity to attend preschool and, therefore, this is their first experience in school. It is my goal to reach every student and their individual needs.
My Project
Math is a fundamental skill and basic number sense is key in kindergarten. I am requesting hands-on materials like Play Doh, math sorting games, and magnetic ten frames in order to help them develop a love of learning math. Often times, you hear people say that they just aren't good at math and it is my job to make sure my students have the foundational skills needed so that they never grow up saying that.
These students deserve every opportunity possible to be successful in learning.
These math materials will help in that process. The more fun they could have in math, the less intimidating it will seem as they progress through their education. Students will be able to use the smaller magnetic ten frames to count and do addition on their own or while following my example on the board with the larger magnetic ten frame. With the Play Doh, students could get a hands on learning experience with numbers, adding and subtracting, and colors and shapes. These are basic skills but without a thorough understanding of the basics, math will seem like a mountain they cannot climb. These materials will give them the strength in math that they need to climb that mountain.
