This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher at P.S. 115 in Washington Heights, New York. As I am preparing to begin my third year of teaching, I cannot help but think about the importance of the classroom library. The classroom library is the primary resource from which my students get to choose their reading books. It is where they are exposed to various genres, authors, and topics. However, I have found that no matter how many book baskets I may have, if a student is not interested in what is inside them, it is hard to get them to be excited about reading.
A huge part of getting students to read is captivating their interests. When students are interested in an author, book series and/or a specific topic, it is hard to get them to stop talking and asking questions. This is a wonderful experience for them as well as for me! However, it is not always easy to find the particular interests of a student when the classroom library is lacking.
Since students are not all the same, they do not like the same authors, series, or topics. So, my main goal is to broaden my library. I want to be able to offer my students a variety of book choices that will help capture all of their interests. I am asking for various books from different series, authors, and topics such as Magic Tree House, Jigsaw Jones, Vera B. Williams, Cynthia Rylant and Pompeii.
I hope that with these additions to my classroom library, students will have a variety of choices to help them spark their interests and make them excited about reading - making them stronger readers.
