My Project
Our school is the first charter college prep boarding school in Los Angeles. Most of our students are underserved black and brown children. They are brilliant and talented and excel, but they are teenagers and hungry! The school has some funding and the children receive 3 healthy meals per day, but we are always on a tight budget for any frills. The students come to class hungry all the time.
My lessons are always integrated into the other subjects that they learn with an emphasis on social emotional learning (SEL).
For these students, SEL is one of the most important things I can teach them so that they can go off to college prepared to shine. The focus I have for the past few months is "empathy," standing in the shoes of another person and feeling what they feel. My goal is to convince them to practice empathy in the classroom, in the dorms, and to bring it home.
I would like to use these snacks as prizes for positive behavior and exemplary work.
