I work at a great school with a dedicated administration and staff. I have been here over 20 years and the student population has changed quite a bit over time. There are many students who speak different languages like Spanish, Japanese, Russian, French, and more. Many students entering my class have special needs like ADD/ADHD, autism, emotional issues, etc. Meeting their individual needs is a challenge!
My students are 6-7 years old and they are excited about learning!
Holding their attention is not an easy task, so I try to offer a variety of projects throughout the day. Two years ago, I focused on teaching mindfulness. A retiring teacher gifted me her yoga mats and once a week we go to the multi-purpose room to practice. Last year, I implemented math centers with more hands-on learning activities like dice games and critical thinking puzzles. This year, I am focusing on broadening my language arts and math blocks to include more center choices.
Teaching first grade is exhausting and rewarding. Every day my students remind me to be in the moment, smile, laugh, and learn something new!
My Project
My students love centers! They get an opportunity to move around the room and participate in different choices. Math is so much more fun when they can play a game or complete a hands-on activity. It also gives me an opportunity to work with small groups on targeted areas of need. There are so many different skill levels in the classroom. It is important to teach with small groups to keep students challenged and provide support where needed.
Versatiles are engaging, independent, and aligned to the standards.
My students would really benefit from the opportunity to use these in the classroom. They would be able to practice their math skills in an engaging format, check their own work, and move at their own pace. I have wanted to add these to my math centers for years, but have never had the funding to do so. I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to give my students the gift of Versatiles!
