My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut! My passion is to instill a love of reading in my students, so they can become lifelong learners that are successful in life!

My students live in a small, farming community where many of their parents struggle to make ends meet.

While many of my students were born in the United States, English is their second language. They work hard to achieve proficiency in both their first language and English, but often times reading in English is challenging in their early years. For this reason, many of their first memories of reading are not enjoyable, and they avoid it. My students have many interests and hobbies, and enjoy lively discussions in class. I have seen their eyes light up when they read about and discuss topics that they find interesting. I know they have the ability to become life-long readers. They just need to be given the opportunity to find the type of reading they enjoy.

My Project

I would like to purchase several books for my class library that are of high interest to my students. Specifically, I would like to purchase several collections of books with similar themes. Many students find it interesting to read novels in which the characters are similar to them. For this reason, I would like to purchase collections of books in which diversity is highlighted. These books would allow my students to have access to reading material that is interesting to them!

Proficiency in literacy is a key indicator in a person's success.

I want to help my students become highly literate adults, and I believe that reading is a great way to help them on this journey! Sadly, many students are not interested in reading because their previous experiences with reading were not enjoyable. My goal is to provide my students with enjoyable reading experiences by providing them with high interest books and inspire them to become readers for life!
