Mrs. Gilas from Hope Mills NC is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books they can relate to like Copper Sun. This book will integrate ELA with Social Studies curriculums.

My students walk into my classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. Many of my students lack technology resources at home, however, they live in a world were technology is a vital part of our daily lives. Teaching students that don't have access to technology means school is the only exposure they get to using up to date technology resources. How are our students going to be prepared for the world outside school without these resources.
I teach at a Title I school in North Carolina where 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.
Many of their parents have to work 2-3 jobs to make ends meet for their children. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My students need more choices for their class novel with characters and authors who look like them. It is so important for students to be able to connect with characters and issues in books, and my students are eager for more books by award-winning authors of color like Sharon Draper. Please help fill my classroom library with copies of Copper Sun! In addition, This book raises really important issues about justice, society, and race relations that can spark amazing classroom discussions and debates that are relevant beyond the walls of my classroom.
With your kind donation, we can build BOTH a love of reading and the critical skill of reading stamina.
The more students read, the more they grow their reading level. It is so important to put engaging, accessible, and developmentally appropriate text in front of students. Thank you so much for your helping to create lifelong learners.
