Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are in grades 9–12 Special Education and have varying degrees of English fluency. Our school serves a diverse student population drawn from some of the most ethnically mixed neighborhoods in our area. Many of my students do not have regular access to reading materials at home and have had limited opportunities to read for personal enjoyment. Providing them with magazines and novels would offer a much-needed reading experience that connects with their lives today and introduces them to a wide range of stories and ideas.

Often, my students have mixed feelings about books and reading.

My daily goal is to open their minds and hearts to the joys of reading — helping them make connections between their ideas, each other, and the world around them. With greater access to engaging materials, they can build confidence, develop a love for reading, and become life-long learners.
