This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm a first-year teacher at a Title I school and it can be challenging to get students excited about learning. I can make what I think are the most engaging lessons and still get little participation.

Little prizes like stickers and snacks go a long way to motivating students and helping me build a relationship with them so that they'll be more likely to participate in the future.

It might seem silly or like a band-aid solution, and of course there are bigger things that I do personally to build bridges. However, when a student is willing to try something in class because they know they can earn a prize, they gain confidence in their ability to complete assignments and it helps me build rapport with them.

These students are good kids with sometimes difficult backgrounds. On rare occasions when they open up to me or I get a parent email with some context, it often breaks my heart. They're doing their best and I want to make school a place they want to be and feel cared about. In addition, the cooler and the refrigerator organizers would be such great additions to my tools as a food teacher. I would use them frequently. Thank you for your consideration!
