Motivating Movement for Kids with Basketballs

My students need 30 basketballs.

I am starting my second year at an Arizona Public Middle school of 825 seventh and eighth grade students. I teach Physical Education and Health and we have a diverse student population from a high need community. Our school was in danger of closing because of poor achievement scores, as well as behavior and violence issues. Instead our district hired many new teachers and moved in a new administration with a directive to fix things. We are a school in transition, but have accomplished a great deal in one year. Our students passed AYP for the first time in three years. All of our student scores were improved and we are on a mission. Our district is in financial stress, and money for equipment is sparse. Our kids needs are many, the social and emotional and financial difficulties they face in their homes creates many obstacles to their learning and development of positive self esteem in our school.

My students ask to play basketball everyday. If I hand them a basketball to use as their own they become very active and motivated to participate as well as to communicate with me their achievements. For some of my students, this basketball is the only positive thing that they experience in their day. I believe that we can continue to change our school climate to a positive learning environment by connecting with the child, and I believe that for many, PE class is where that connection and experience of success can occur.

The basketballs that I have requested will allow me to provide opportunities for more of my students to participate in PE class and actually touch a ball and play. We will also use the basketballs for reward time for our students after lunch. Student who are nominated by their teacher for demonstrating respect, responsibility and caring will earn the right to use this equipment and be active because of positive choices that they have made. My students will have even more opportunity to connect with their peers and experience success.

Your help will ensure that my students have a basketball to play with. They will be motivated to move and participate. This will allow them to be successful, build skill, and practice the respect, responsibility and caring that is our campus theme for this next school year. Remember, they ask me every day to play basketball. I had to tell them no last spring, because we have no basketballs that they can use. A gift from a donor will help me teach them to say thank you and to take care of those things that are important to us, and to understand that only because of someone else's generosity are they allowed to have this equipment and these experiences.
