This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My classroom is a learning haven. In grade one, my students have developed a love for math through playing games and group work. They are 6- and 7-year-old boys and girls, who are inquisitive. They enjoy solving math challenges with their peers. My students are of mixed backgrounds, mainly from low economic status. Many of the students in my class live in neighborhood shelters.
My students are creative thinkers, motivated to explore their learning environment.
They begin every morning, ready to learn despite their home conditions. My students vary in academic ability. Some of them are performing at grade level, while others are still learning basic math and reading skills.
What I love about my students is that their will to learn grows stronger every day. What they require of me is that I have the necessary materials available for them to extend their knowledge.
As we approach the ending of the school year, I wish to ensure that my students will have access to materials that keep them engaged and enthusiastic about learning.
My Project
My students have math workshop daily, however, they are missing learning centers to help them independently practice their skills. Addition and Subtraction Learning Centers will be used by groups of four students at a time.
With math centers, my students will gain independence and motivation.
Students will begin each math lesson by reviewing their math strategies with each learning center. During the 50 minute block, students will rotate between addition and subtraction instant learning centers, comparing numbers instant learning centers, and number bonds so that they can practice more than one skill daily. Research has shown that early learners learn best with repetition. Instant math centers will allow my students to be successful in gaining knowledge as early mathematicians.
