My Students

My school is a diverse neighborhood school where there are many different cultures and families and a broad socio-economic range. It is a Title I school where over half of the families receive free and reduced lunch.

My students are curious about the world, eager to learn and full of energy!

They bring excitement to learning and try their best. First grade is such an amazing year to teach because the students make so much growth in a year. Every year I am flabbergasted by the number of kids that say, "I can't read" at the start of first grade, and then by June are devouring books. It is my hope that these kids will continue their enthusiasm for learning throughout and beyond their school careers to become life-long learners.

My Project

When we have our math work place time, if the teacher is working with a small group of students, it is difficult to give students immediate feedback. The benefit of immediate feedback is that students can change their thinking or learning from their mistakes or have the affirmation that they're on the right path.

Versatiles are a unique self-checking activity that allows students to work on problems and then flip over their tiles to see if they have answered correctly.

If the student answers correctly, they will see a geometric pattern that corresponds to the book, if they're incorrect, the pattern doesn't match and they have to go back and check their work. First graders are intrigued by patterns and get excited about novelty. I'm predicting that Versatiles will be a hot commodity during our math work place time!
