Motivated Language Learners Seek to Hear How It's Read
My students need a classroom listening center with a boombox and headphones so that they have more opportunities to hear the targeted language and practice the reading strategies being taught.

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We want language! We need to hear it! We live in a global society and my students are preparing themselves linguistically. Unfortunately some of my students do not get enough opportunities to hear stories in the targeted language at home and that's why we want a listening center.
My students are first graders in a dual language (Spanish Immersion) program at a public charter school in an urban community in Southern California, where 76% of our students are socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Since it is a dual immersion class, 50% of my students are learning Spanish as their second language with no Spanish language support at home.
My Project
Being that it is a dual language class some of my students are not getting enough opportunities to hear stories in the targeted language. My students have been asking for a listening center to explore and reread preferred stories, poems, and songs. Unfortunately we don't have a working listening center.
By receiving a boom box and headphones students will be able to practice reading and comprehension skills not just in whole group instruction and small guided reading groups, but also independently. Students will use this center during our literacy center block. Reading groups will work on the text with me as well as listen to similar stories in the center. The listening center provides students with the chance to hear how characters talk and builds reading fluency.
I have been teaching first grade for more than 10 years and I have seen the benefits of a listening center in the classroom.
Not only is it enjoyable for the students but it helps develop their confidence in reading while they hear how reading should sound. Help my students on their journey to become trilingual by providing them with one of the listening tools needed.
