Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is an SEI class, which means we focus all day with English Language development. The majority of my students are second language learners hoping to reclassify before the end of the school year.
My students come from low-income backgrounds who need extra loving and supplies in the classroom to help encourage them to come to school.
Our school is focusing on attendance, and I think by giving the students more choice to help them become excited to get to school on time and every day.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them. During independent work times, they choose a location in the classroom that works for them. Currently, my students can decide where to work during writing. They can pick their tables, sitting under tables with clipboards, or sitting or lying on the floor with a clipboard.
By giving them wobble chairs or movement cushions helps provides the student with choice and help them get their wiggles out while working.
Making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them. I have noticed surprising differences in my students when they are given a choice in their seating. They almost always make good choices about where they sit, are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desks.
Students also need book organizers to help them find books that are at their current reading level. It gives them an independent choice when the class library is organized for them to understand where to find their books.
