Motivate Readers to Succeed with Healthy Snack Program

My students need a wall clock, digital voice recorder and plenty of healthy snacks to provide instruction and motivation as they strive to improve their reading.

My Students

School year 2016 - 2017 and I am psyched. I have a group of very motivated seventh and eighth graders. They've all taken the initial reading assessment and are now four weeks in to working hard on their reading. Several students have already leveled up in the program and many are doing extra work over the weekend in an attempt to earn "combos" and improve their reading.

They are all special education students who have been identified with a reading problem.

For many, this is the second year in my reading class and they came in raring to go. For, if they can attain grade level in reading, they can exit the class and take an elective of their choice. This group is respectful, motivated, intelligent and eager. They are willing to take risks and willing to work hard.

My Project

This will be the fifth quarter I have implemented a Healthy Snack Program. I've had great results utilizing a motivation system that rewards kids for their reading accomplishments and behavior through administering points that allows students to purchase healthy snacks as well as other "fun and for free" type prizes such as "Sit where you like" and "Fan hog" cards.

I am asking for a good supply of healthy snacks that will be showcased in the back of the room.

When students earn achievements and points in their reading program, they can "purchase" the healthy snacks. My special education students struggle with telling time with an analog clock and I would like to simplify that struggle by having a digital clock that tells them the time and the data. This will help their stress level as well as their independence. Finally, a digital recorder will be used in my reading instruction and allow for the creation of "Tableaux stories" which involve student story telling and play acting to illustrate still shots or drawings of the action they are narrating.
