I teach fifth grade in a school with a 401 student body. It is in a small but growing rural community of about 4,500 residents and is nestled in the Piedmont area of South Carolina. Thirty-six percent of our students are on free or reduced lunch. "Motion Detectives" will give all 80 fifth graders the opportunity to integrate technology with science. As part of our state science standards, students must predict, observe, and quantify time of objects in motion. Most of the materials are already on-hand. Five motion detectors would afford students the opportunity and benefit to gather, chart, and graph motion of objects using a high tech, data-collecting interface. I am asking for 5 motion detectors and feel confident that this is just one small step forward in keeping up with the growing need for a technologically literate population.
