Motion, Commotion - Newton's Laws in Action

My students need science materials (OHAUS Triple Beam Balance, cars, and stopwatches) to help them explore Newton's Laws of Motion. These materials will give students opportunity to observe, graph, and record all 3 of Newton's Laws of Motion.

My Students

My school has a transient population of students. We have 2 types of students - short term (5 to 10 days) and long term (1 semester to a year or longer). The students come to us generally 1 or more years behind their cohorts. The population of students are mainly minority males. Some of the students are being raised by different relatives.

They need help with meeting the new STEM standards that are being incorporated into the curriculum.

Many of my students come from homes that do not have access to reliable internet.

My Project

The Commotion of Motion will allow students to explore Newton's Laws of Motion.

Students will be meeting STEM standards through the exploration on how mass of objects effect the speed of the constant velocity cars.

Students will calculate the mass of the cars using a triple beam balance. They will then calculate the mass of various objects in class. The objects will be put on the cars to see how they affect the speed of the cars.

Students will conduct several trials using the cars, different masses, and stopwatches. Upon completion, students will construct a graph of their results.
